Burt was raised on his family’s ranch in Meagher County. After graduating high school from White Sulphur Springs High School in 2000, he attended Rocky Mountain College in Billings, Montana. Taking classes from equestrian studies to biological anthropology to choir and drama and completing a NOLS (National Outdoor Leadership School) Semester in the Rockies, as well as an internship in the Montana State Senate, he somehow graduated in 2004 with a BA in History/Political Science. Having no other options after graduation, Burt went to the University of Montana School of Law. He was elected by his peers to serve on the Student Bar Association for all three years of Law School, serving as first year Representative, American Bar Association Representative, and as President of the SBA in his third year. He was also a member of the International Law Society and studied law in Norway for a summer. After cutting off 12 inches of his hair and shaving his beard, he was also allowed to represent the School of Law in the American Trial Lawyer Association’s student advocacy competition. By far his proudest accomplishment in law school was co-founding the Rural Advocacy League, a student group dedicated to raising awareness of legal issues affecting rural Montanans. He has stayed involved as Chairman of the Board of the newly formed RAL non-profit. In 2007, Burt graduated from law school and received four awards, the Outstanding Law Student Award for 2007, the Dean’s Award in Recognition of Outstanding Student Leadership, the Carol Mitchell Award given to a senior for understanding and commitment to mediation and alternative dispute resolution, and the International Academy of Trial Lawyers Student Advocacy Award.
